Namaste, Tashi Delek, Julley, Sawatdee, Ayubovan…

... welcome to our current autumn newsletter!

Like always, we start it off with a personal message from roadcaptain Peter:
My first "Special Friends" tour in Ladakh ending up in Kullu Valley has been a huge success. Pictures of the tour here in the newsletter and in the linked Facebook album.

There is also quite an impressive video which will give you a "true biker's perspective", shot by our camera man Timo Liese with a helmet mounted Hero GoPro.

Classic Bike Adventures India - 3 Lakes Of Ladakh Tour August 2013

Since it was such great fun to do this tour in the Himalayas together with good friends, we have decided to do it all over again in 2014. This time the "Special Friends Tour" will be my personal favourite namely the "Little Tibet - Spiti-valley-tour", to which we have added some extra features. The tour will lead through Lahaul crossing the wild Sach pass down into Chamba valley. From there on we will ride our bikes to Daramsala, the exile-home of the Dalai Lama. The tour will end there, but for those who would like to spend a few more days at Peter's farm house in the Kullu valley - always welcome!

We have five reservations already and we are looking forward to this upcoming adventure.
Here are two Facebook albums from the first Spiti tour in 2011, already with the legendary Sach pass crossing.

Construction supervisor, my friend Vinod, together with six brothers and sisters and their aunt.
Our small “Good Karma Project”

It's been a year now that we have first reported on the family of seven orphans and a lot has happened since. The eldest daughter has left home getting married at the age of sixteen. All other six children are still living with their aunt in the same household. They all attend the same village school and they are in good shape and healthy. We support their livelyhoods with a sum of 7.000 Rupies per month which equals around 90 to 100 Euros, depending on the exchange rate.

Our GOOD KARMA PROJECT has received a total of 3.400 € in donations. For a year now we have three "regulars", who support this project, plus we received four times a lump sum of 500 Euros from "big spenders". The family would like to express its deepest gratitude towards all these fine people.

So far we have spent 1.000 € for building materials and wages. The fitout and expansion are in full swing and the basement should be finished before winter featuring a basic bathroom with toilet, a big livingroom/bedroom plus kitchen area. There are plans for two "guest-rooms" next spring to be rented out for tourists, thus enabling the family to receive a small income. This could help to pay for tuition fees for one or two of the older boys. when they start middle school in summer.
When all building work will be finished we will present a proper accounting statement. Until then all six kids are happy about any donations coming their way.

Still a lot of work to be done... unfortunately last year showed only little progress, monsoon only just ended and good workers were hard to come by. But now progress is being made, all the work utensils and materials have been logged up to the site.

10th anniversary of our karma calender!

Dear friends and supporters of the karma calender!
It's ready, the 10th issue of our calendar is coming out!  Like every year since its beginning we can only make a difference if you support this project. For all of you who do not know about it:

For several years now we are publishing a calender with photographs of children, made by myself during my travels in India, thanks to the support of volontary helpers. For a donation starting at 10 Euros you can order a copy of that calender. It will be delivered to you before the holiday season. My parents cover the printing costs, so that all the money goes to the charity  'German Doctors' (former 'Doctors for the Third World'), who for example use this money to help thousand of kids in Calcutta to escape dying from tuberculosis. I myself have visited there and I could see what was being done with that money. You can watch a Video, about the work of the "German Doctors" in Calcutta on the "Karma-Kalender" website.

Alltogether about 300.000 Euro in donations have been collected over the years.

If you like the project you can help in the following way:

  • Order one or more calendars. In the link you find more information about the project and the "German Doctors".
  • Anybody ordering 10 calendars or more will be mentioned . You also can order a bigger amount of calendars and try to raise donations from friends. In case you are left with any calendars you can send them back to us.
  • Businesses or companies taking 40 calendars or more can have their logo printed, this is a great idea for a christmas present.
  • On the bottom there will be a text that you can copy and paste to ask friends and family to participate.
  • If you want to be kept in the loop of what is happening befriend us at the Karma-Kalender page at Facebook :

Last order date for the calendar is end of October.
Thank you all for your support and help,
Marc Ludwig for the whole Karma-Kalender Team!

New in Assagao, our village in Goa, close to our Casa Tres Amigos:
Cheshire Cat Gallery Goa, the home of Van Andel & Peace Jewels

https://www.facebook.com/CheshireCatGalleryGoa
The story of Van Andel & Peace Jewels.
Kees van Andel and Karen Peace are a creative design team who met up in Amsterdam in the 80's and are now based in Goa, India.
Travelling in India in the 90's they fell in love with the rich culture, vibrant colours and dazzling selection of high-quality gemstones available in this magical subcontinent.
Finally settling in Goa in 1999, they have since opened their studio in a secluded inland leafy village far away from the bustle of mainstream tourism, known as the Cheshire Cat Gallery Goa.

Their lives are filled with magic and spirituality and through their jewellery designs, they seek to share with us their inner chest of fantastical treasures.

Using ancient techniques of goldsmithing such as granulation and filigree, and working with rich 22ct gold, they select gemstones for their depth of colour and purity, and create eye-catching combinations of light and textures that delight and amaze.

Van Andel & Peace draw their inspirations from ethnic Indian, as well as Victorian designs, blending traditional motifs with very contemporary styling. Their singular creations have been described variously as "Fairytale", "Baroque" and "Chic-Antique", where each piece begins as a vision that gradually evolves as the work progresses.

Following no set rules and confined by no boundaries, their jewellery is designed for women with a strong sense of individuality and style.

"Overland Tour News" by our Werner and his project

Bike and Bus to India Overland Tour Bike and Bus to India Overland Tour

Both overland tours autumn 2012 and spring 2013 have been finished successfully. All bikers managed the challenges of the road and have had a great many adventures.........:-).They all reached Germany on time and accident free. The end of the tour was celebrated in the old town part of Duesseldorf. Werner und Andrea are already planning the next overland bike tour to India and back again.

The next overland tour Germany - India will start on 22th of September 2014, this time with their own transport vehicle. The new backup van is smaller and more flexible then a big bus, it will stay close by with the group at all times. Luggage, spares, food and snacks are always at the ready. There will be a complete spare bike on board as well. Should there be a need for a major repair the bike is switched and taken care off at the next main stopover.

Apart from Werner, we will have a tour guide in the team.
Our new man is Steffen he is an experienced biker, and he has joined the last tour going from India to Germany.

With his 33 years he has seen quite a lot of the world and has been living several years in India as well as in Switzerland. He is a true globetrotter. If he is not sitting on a bike he is managing his marketing agency in Switzerland
Bike and Bus to India Overland Tour Steffen will act as your guide and he will share driving the truck with Werner as well. He will take care of hotel bookings and write a blog about the tour.

New: The autumn tour Germany - India 2014 will be crossing the roads of the Balkans for the first time. The long ferry ride from Italy to Greece is just too boring...
And our new project:
The back-trip India - Germany, in April 2015 will for the first time go through Tibet-Kyrghizistan-Kazakhstan-Usbekistan-Kasachstan-Russia-Ukraine-Poland-Tchechien to Germany. This will be a  pilot tour, especially for all those experienced "Bike & Bus to India"- Biker and our friends. Together we will scout this new route and enjoy the adventures on the road.
