Ladakh 3 Lakes Tour – Summer 2017

THE 2017 AUTUMN NEWSLETTER

Ladakh 3 Lakes – Summer 2017

Our third Ladakh group in summer 2017 – eight women and ten men from Australia, the UK, the US, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany enjoyed the highest Himalayan passes and most beautiful lakes...

Hey everyone, welcome to our autumn newsletter!

And now, the news:

We have at least 17 tours slated for 2018, and eleven of them are already fully booked.
If you’re looking for one of our Classic Bike Adventure tours for next year, here are the remaining openings:

7 – 21 Jan. 2018: Goa and South India Classic Tour
25 Mar. – 8 Apr. 2018: Nepal “The Road To Mustang” Pilot Tour with Lo Magtang / Upper Mustang
30 Jun. – 14 Jul. 2018: Three Lakes of Ladakh Tour
18 – 31 Oct. 2018: Bhutan Intensive Ride

Bike tours in 2018

These four tours will be guided by me, Road Captain Peter, and the team.

A couple of Bullets are still up for grabs on these tours:
18 Aug. – 1 Sept. 2018 Three Lakes of Ladakh Tour (guide: Tiziana)
25 Nov. – 9 Dec. 2018 Goa and South India Classic Tour (guide: Martin)

Upper Mustang Pilot Tour 2018

Our next pilot tour has been set: Nepal’s Rough Road to Upper Mustang

For the first time, we’re going to head up the legendary Lo Mantang (3,840 m) and the Kora La pass (4,600 m) at the border to Tibet. The dates: 25 Mar. – 1 Apr. 2018 – 18 days is enough time to take things at a relaxed pace and have fun…

The jeep trail in Upper Mustang is finally ready so that we can tackle it with our Bullets. Look forward to plenty of dust, mud, rocks and fords and spectacular mountain vistas from Kalakandaki – the deepest valley of the Himalayas between two 8,000-meter peaks – to dizzying heights. A true adventure!
Mustang is still a very exclusive destination for bikers – remote and not exactly cheap with its $550 entrance fee.

Lo Mangtag (3,840 m) in the Upper Mustang valley has only been accessible via a jeep track for the past two years. Previously, you could only get there on foot or on the back of a yak or donkey.

We’ve run our Three Lakes of Ladakh tour more than thirty times since 2009, tackling the Himalaya’s highest passes with more than 500 enthusiastic bikers.

It was time to rework the tour, so in August we scouted out new trails in all of Ladakh’s valleys and made quite a few discoveries.

The result: our Ladakh tours are going to be better than ever in 2018.

We will be spending 14 days in Ladakh, with more time for relaxed cruising and getting to know the country and its people, spectacular scenery and authentic Buddhist culture in monasteries, temples and villages. We’ve also added some very special hotels to the program:

As before, the tour starts and ends in Leh with direct flights from New Delhi and back so we won’t have to deal with the Indian monsoon – at least not in the saddle. The tour consists of three loops starting and ending in Leh, from which we will be visiting all of the valleys and tackling at least seven passes between 4,000 and 5,400 meters altitude.

The tours are designed to give us enough time to adjust to the altitude of the passes and lakes. We’ll then spend three nights at the most beautiful lakes at over 4,000 meters. At Pangong and Tsomori Lake, we’ll be staying in comfortable deluxe tents with private toilets and washing facilities. Hot water will only be available in the wash bowl, however, as before...

We’ll be riding our very own Royal Enfield 500cc Bullets that we use exclusively for these tours. So, no clapped-out bikes from any of the more than 60 local bike rental agencies that are all struggling to survive and are totally clueless about decent service. Our Bullets are serviced by mechanics that have been with us for years, and we can guarantee you the best bikes anywhere in the Himalayas.

For 2018, we only have a few free bikes left on two Ladakh tours:
30 Jun. – 14 Jul. 2018 – 2 bikes free
18 Aug. – 2 Sept. 2018 – 2 bikes free
We’re likely to schedule a fourth Ladakh tour:
We’ll then have more openings from 14 to 28 July 2018.

Here once again, the big topic of the summer newsletter:

It’s about Peter’s tour project that will unite all of his favorite regions and trails and offer some new highlights.

The original plan was to head out for four months, starting in spring 2019.
We’ve restructured the tour. It’s now called:

Five countries – Vietnam – Laos – Thailand – Yunnan – Myanmar – in one tour!

Peter’s great Southeast Asia Farewell Tour in spring 2019

We already have so many registrations for summer 2019 that he simply can’t go off and spend four months on the road.
Also, your interest seems to be focused on the first stages of the tour.

We already have enough riders interested in the stages from Chiang Mai, Thailand through Laos to Vietnam, then to Shangri La in Yunnan, southern China, and again from Chiang Mai, Thailand to Myanmar/Burma.
These three stages will be happening in March and April 2019.
A serious adventure is taking shape, and you’re all invited.

Classic Bike Tours 2018

Classic Bike Classic Bike

For all of our friends who want to head out for a real experience with Road Captain Peter, this is could well be your last chance.

Each stage of the journey will be about 18 to 21 days long and offer plenty of unforgettable adventures. The stages will cost around €4,000 for the complete package. International flights to the starting point and home from the destination are not included.

We’ll be using a variety of bikes, cruising the dirty roads and tracks together with our experienced crews, local guides and partners of the last 30 years.

We’re going to take it easy, stay in beautiful places and take the occasional day off to kick back and relax...

We’ll be setting out from Chiang Mai, northern Thailand.

The route consists of three stages that you can book a la carte – or as one complete tour of a lifetime. We’re going to keep the group small, with twelve bikes at the most. Stay tuned for more info in the late autumn – we’re working on the routes and pricing...

1 ) Chiang Mai / Thailand Tour through Myanmar covering all of the highlightsChiang Mai, Thailand .( 18 days in March)

2) Chiang Mai, Thailand - Luang Prabang, Laos - Hanoi, and the North of Vietnam - Chiang Mai (21 days March/April )

3 ) Flight from Chiang Mai to Dali Yunnan up to Shangri La via Dali, Sichuan in Southern China flight back to Home or Chiang Mai (15 days in April)

Classic Bike Classic Bike

PISTON GOD (© Marco Möller) did not like this one bit:

This is the swing arm of our Royal Enfield Himalayan after 17,000 km. JUNK! This is far from the only problem with these bikes, and we’re just one of many unhappy RE Himalayan customers.

Royal Enfield is no help in keeping these bikes on the road. There’s really nothing good to be said about them, and there are no spare parts to be had anywhere. What a colossal disappointment. To check out the whole drama in its epic dimensions, just google:

We’ll take a classic Royal Enfield Bullet any day – here’s a fully pimped Bollywood beauty!

Southern India Tour
Winter will be here before you know it! The perfect antidote: we still have free bikes on our classic Goa and South India tours, a great way to beat the winter blues with tropical biking in an exotic wonderland. Here are a few openings:

The Goa – Kerala Colonial Mountain Trail tour from 17 Feb. to 5 Mar. 2018 was fully booked until recently. We now have one room and one to two bikes free.

Casa Tres Amigos, Goa

And if you’re not up to a South India tour, you’re more than welcome to decompress at the Casa Tres Amigos in Goa. We’re open from September to April, with a new pool and pool bar this season – and everything else just as welcoming and laid-back as ever.

Casa Tres Amigos, Goa – New Swimming Pool

We have the best Royal Enfield Bullets ready for our house guests for short or long rides to the many idyllic beaches in the South and North, the jungles and hills of the Western Ghats and the ruins of old forts and temples. There’s a lot to discover, and we’re always happy to point spontaneous biker groups in the right direction with our routing tips.

Last month we closed out our Ladakh season without incident and with nearly 100 enthusiastic participants. This year, we took four groups cruising on the highest Himalayan passes. Here are a few impressions:

Ladakh Tour Summer 2017

If you want to join us in Ladakh next year, a few bikes are still available on three tours...

Ladakh tour

Five biker ladies with us on the “highest pass”, Kardung La, which is still officially listed as 5,600 meters. Actually, anybody who’s been up there with a GPS or altimeter knows that that’s way off the mark.

In reality, it’s just over 5,400 meters! No problem, though: a new pass was recently opened – the Umling La, also in Ladakh – with a guaranteed 5,800 meters. As soon as the military opens the road for us “tourists”, we’re going to add it to our Ladakh tours.

If you want to join us in Ladakh next year, a few bikes are still available on three tours...

The tour price:
€2,980 – bikers in double rooms
€2,560 – pillion or jeep passengers in double rooms
€490 – single-room surcharge

We still have openings on three dates:
30 Jun. – 14 Jul. 2018 – 2 bikes free
14 Jul. – 28 Aug. 2018 – this will be the special date – numerous bikes still free
18 Aug. – 1 Sept. 2018 – 2 bikes free

Bikers Support Nepal

We’re gradually wrapping up our BIKERS SUPPORT NEPAL project. One part is still incomplete – the health post in Dubachaur, the project of the FORE bikers from Kathmandu. As soon as we can call the health post a success, we’ll send out a final report to all of the project supporters. Here’s the link to our project website:

Ladakh Aid

Road Captain Peter wrote from Leh in early July:

Roli, Pia und I presented the donation by the Swiss bikers of www.training-reisen.ch to the REWA Society organizers – http://www.ladakh-hilfe.de/ in Leh. Our two Swiss South India groups raised €2,000 last winter, and we handed over Rs 141,000 yesterday ... it was a joy for all of us ... More about the project: http://www.ladakh-hilfe.de/english/

In August we received a further donation by our third Ladakh group:
