Tropical Biking Fun - Sri Lanka – Ceylon – The Island Of Serendipity

GROUP_SRI_LANKA_FEB_2012

Explore this tropical island paradise on our 250cc enduro motorcycles and street bikes  - during our Motorcycle Tour Of Sri Lanka

"Ayubowan" -  Welcome !

Sri Lanka - Sanskrit for "resplendent country" - holds the promise of unique beauty. Early naval explorers praised this appealing island and gave it poetic names like "Pearl of the Indian Ocean" or "Island of the Gods".

Now it's time for bikers to discover this paradise, with its palms swaying in the breeze along mile-long beaches, dense jungle forests, tea plantations and  rich green rice paddies.
Thousands of years of history have left their traces on the island. The many statues of Buddha and other deities, temples and monasteries are expressions of deep religiosity.

In addition to cultural wealth and lush vegetation full of exotic fruits and flowers, a huge diversity of wildlife captivates visitors, and not only on adventurous safaris in the national parks. Come join us on our Motorcycle Tour Of Sri Lanka.

SRI_LANKA_TOUR_FEB_2012_HWe travel Ceylon - as the island was called for centuries by its colonial masters - on bikes through narrow, winding roads through jungles and mountains, past plantations and temples. Our 250cc enduro motorcycles make exploring this tropical paradise a truly exhilarating experience.

Between 2000 and 2005, we realized several pilot bike tours and five group motorcycle tours in Sri Lanka before circumstances forced a hiatus for several years. Peace has now returned to the island, and we're back! Our first tour in Feb.2012 was a huge success. Here the best pics from the latest tour.

Join our professional motorcycle tour team in their passion for Sri Lanka - we're looking forward to our new tropical biking adventures.

Come and experience it all in our Sri Lanka Bike Tour:

The Art of Tropical Cruising

Day 1

Please book your own flight - we'll meet you at the airport in Colombo. SriLankan Airlines offers direct flights from many European cities to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka.

Our driver will be waiting at the airport exit and after a short 20-minute bus ride, we'll reach our first accommodation in Negombo, the Paradise Beach Resort or a similar hotel. Time to relax at the pool or enjoy the beach, have a cool beer or maybe an ayurvedic massage?

We'll enjoy our welcome dinner in the open-air restaurant with a sea view.

Day 2

Warming up ride

After breakfast we'll take a short walk to collect our bikes. From Negombo, we'll start our warm up motorcycle tour to the northern central plains of Sri Lanka.

We mix small countryside roads with the busy National Highway, and after 3-4 hrs of riding fun we will reach the comforable Sorowwa Resort at Habarana near Sigiriya.

We have the option to enjoy an elephant ride around the scenic lake during sundown, later buffet dinner with local and international specialities at the resort.

Approx. 160 km

Day 3: Rock of Sigiriya

The rock of Sigiriya holds a very special place in Singhalese culture and history. Once, the brother of the legitimate ruler lived there after murdering his father and crowning himself king. From his palace on the rock with its sheer walls, he reigned until challenged by the army of his brother. When his defeat became inevitable, he cut his own throat, fearing the torture that would have followed.

To savor the special atmosphere of this place, we'll tackle the ascent in the morning before breakfast. After our little adventure on foot, we can relax on the terrace of our guesthouse and enjoy a big breakfast.

Later, we'll take beautiful roads to Kandy. Between 1500 and 1800 AD, this was the last capital of the kingdom of Sri Lanka. Kandy is famous for its history and culture and is situated in the mountains at an altitude of 500 m, surrounded by dense forests.

Our hotel is close to the banks of "Milk Lake", where we can encounter meter-long monitor lizards, while flying foxes hang upside down in the trees overhead. No need to worry, though - they eat fruit and avoid bikers. Have we already mentioned that Sri Lanka is really exotic?

We will reside for 2 nights at the 170 years oldHotel "Suisse", overlooking the Kandy lake.

approx. 160 km

SRI_LANKA_CBA_6 Day 4: Tooth Temple

In the early morning, we'll visit the famous Tooth Temple, a sacred Buddhist site in town. Afterward, we'll return to our colonial-style hotel for breakfast.

A delicacy of different kind is on our afternoon program: a day motorcycle trip into the mountains of the Knuckles Range - 150 km of narrow, winding roads through mountain forests and tea plantations. Biking at its finest!

If you have any energy to spare after the ride, we can go shopping and sightseeing in Kandy.

approx. 120 km

Day 5: Wasgamuwa National Park

From Kandy we set off northward toward Matale on our motorcycles. There we'll have the opportunity to visit a marvelous Hindu temple. Shortly afterward, we'll take a look at one of the many spice gardens along the road. Here we'll learn, for example, which leaves are the basic substance of green curry or how aromatic substances are extracted from sandalwood to be used as a valuable ingredient for perfumes all over the world.

After Matale, our road branches off into the rugged Knuckles Range. We start by crossing flat country before the road twists its way up into the heights of tea and coffee plantations.

We'll stop at a beautiful little mountain river for a dip and maybe a picnic. Continuing through pristine countryside, we'll reach our nature resort near Wasgamuwa National Park, situated on the banks of a lake. The park still has a large population of wild elephants. We'll have the opportunity for a safari and with a little bit of luck, we can get close to the elephants. Many other animals are waiting to be discovered in the park as well...

Overnight stay at the scenic lake in "Willy´s Safari Hotel"- wich also offers a refreshing pool, close to the parks entrance.

approx. 150 km

SRI_LANKA_TOUR_FEB_2012_BE Day 6: Back to the central mountains and tea plantations

Today we're going for altitude. We'll ride our bikes through an amazing landscape along bright green rice paddies and steep tea plantations, where women in colorful clothing work hard so that we can enjoy a cup of aromatic Ceylon tea back home.

Stunning mountain roads will take us to Ella Gap, where the mountains end abruptly at spectacular cliffs that plummet to the plains that stretch to the east coast.

Accommodation and dinner at the "County Comfort Inn" or at the  “Grand Ella Motel”, with its unforgettable view...

approx. 150 km
SRI_LANKA_TOUR_FEB_2012_N Day 7: Tea Planation

Today we'll cross Horton's Plains, a high-altitude plateau strongly reminiscent of Scotland. From there, we can either hike for two hours to World's End, a spectacular 1,650 m precipice, or ride to Poor Man's World's End, which is directly accessible by bike. As bikers, we can consider the second option without too many scruples. Our experienced Sri Lanka Motorcycle Tour guide will base the decision on the weather conditions.

The following roads through the heart of a tea planation are often rough and can be demanding. But we'll be rewarded with views and insights into another world, including a tea factory where we learn about the complicating process of fermenting tea.

In the evening, we'll return to our hotel at the edge of the cliffs, tired but elated.

approx. 100 km

Day 8: Surfer Beach of Arugam Bay

We may start the day with a morning walk to the tea plantations and cliffs of Ella Gap.

After breakfast, we'll head down to the east coast. Taking winding roads through plains and jungle areas, we'll reach Pottuvil, a small fishing port. From there it's only a few minutes by bike to the renowned surfer beach of Arugam Bay.

But take care! Wild elephants roam the area, and imagine suddenly coming across one blocking the road in front of you. If an elephant wags his ears and trunk at you, he's definitely not in a joking mood! With any luck, our encounters won't be too close.

Dinner and accommodation in the legendary  "Stardust-Beach-Resort" directly on the shores of the Indian Ocean. This resort under Danish managment runs one of the best restaurants on the whole island, you  will enjoy excellent "fusion cooking". Here we will order and pay our dinners individually.

Day 9: Beach day or two different bike rides to choose..

Today is a beach day - time to enjoy the clear tropical sea and the imposing waves.

If you really need to ride, we can organize a short day trip on challenging, sandy coastal tracks to the beach village of Panama. Once again, we'll keep our eyes peeled for wild elephants and other tropical wildlife.
Ride with care, though - we have a number of water and deep sand passages to master.

Also there is a option to try out the new 75km costal highway to the north, superb sceneries and landscapes to discover, on this perefct (EU financed) "Tsunami Aid" road.

Dinner and accommodation again in the same beach resort.

max. 60 km

SRI_LANKA_TOUR_FEB_2012_B Day 10: Long ride on the southern Highways to the "Palm Paradise Cabanas" at Tangale.

Today we need to cover some ground. We'll take the main road, which will lead us along the beautiful south coast later on. In the afternoon we'll reach Tangalle, the southernmost point of our Sri Lanka bike tour, and spend the night directly at the beach in the "Palm Paradise Cabanas", since 20 years under German managment with a very cozy "private beach" bay..

approx. 220 km
TIZ_SRI_LANKA28

Day 11: Beach and Small Rock Temple

A beach day with swimming, ayurvedic massage and relaxing from yesterday's long, hard tour. Time to decompress.
If your throttle hand is still twitching, you can ride to the fishing harbour in the neighbouring town or to a small rock temple nearby.
If you want the big ride, it´s just 80 km to Galle, the famous Dutch colonial fortress and town. The highway road is worth to ride it force and back, and Galle is still a very fascinating solid walled old town on the cliffs of the Pacific ocean.
Dinner and overnight stay at the "Palm Paradise Cabanas".

max. 190 km

IMGP3106 Day 12

Today we say goodbye to the south coast. The mountains are calling!

We'll drive northward on our bikes to the mountain ranges of Sri Lanka. Full day "Mountain Biking" at it´s best. En route, we'll stay overnight in Belihul Oya to recharge our batteries for the next day...Dinner and stay at the old colonial bungalow, now converted into the"Resthouse" in  Belihul Oya.

approx. 200 km

Day 13: Adam's Peak

No journey to Sri Lanka would be complete without Adam's Peak, one of Sri Lanka's highest mountains at 2,300 meters and a famous place of pilgrimage for Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians! We approach its majesty from the south, coming as close as possible, and stop in Palabadella to pay our respects. From there we have a marvelous view of the entire Maskeliya Range.

We continue on our motorcycles through the winding roads further north and then down into the jungle valley of the Kelani Ganga river. The river became famous in the 1950's when the movie "The Bridge on the River Kwai" was shot here.

In the afternoon, we can go river rafting, canyoning, paddeling,  or take a short jungle trek.

Dinner and accommodation in the„Borderlands Adventure Resort“.  Borderlands welcomes you to our picturesque riverfront camp, which is located in Kithulgala, Sri Lanka’s capital of adrenalin sports. Nine luxury tents are situated on stilted platforms, perched directly over the Kelani River. On site showers and toilets are located on site. Fall asleep to the soothing sound of the river as it rushes below you and wake up to views of the dawn mist rising over the jungle clad mountainsides.

We will stay in tents covered by thatched roofs, ensuring a dry stay at all times. The comfortable tents feature twin beds (which can be converted into double beds), quality linen, bedside tables and lamps, as well as a private terrace with spectacular views overlooking the stunning Kelani River.

approx. 180 km

 IMGP2818 Day 14: Colombo

The last day of our Sri Lanka Bike Tour. We leave the mountains on narrow roads and avoid to plunge into the traffic chaos of Colombo. Staying on smaller side roads, we'll reach Negombo, our starting point two weeks ago, in the early afternoon, time left to enjoy another magic sundown at the beach.

Overnight accommodation in our beach hotel in Negombo. We'll follow our farewell dinner with a pub and club night to say good bye to Sri Lanka.

approx. 110 km
