Ladakh Group August 2016
The third of five “3 Lakes of Ladakh” Classic Bike Adventure groups in August 2016

 September 2016 newsletter

First, some personal words from Road Captain Peter: We just got back from Ladakh, a fantastic land on the roof of the world. This season, we guided five avid groups of bikers over the world’s highest passes, and that’s just one highlight of our Himalaya tours. Even after 24 years, I’m still deeply moved by Ladakh’s people, culture and fantastic scenery.

If you want to get to know the authentic culture, landscape and way of life of Himalayan Buddhists, the only places where you can still find them are in Ladakh, Spiti and Mustang. We can take you there every year on our various bike tours. I’ve been on the road in India on our incomparably rugged Royal Enfield Bullets since 1989, and there has never been a dull moment. I often think of the many fascinating people I’ve met on our tours over the years and the amazing experiences we’ve shared. Many of you have become my friends, and together we just keep on rolling. It’s a modest life, and I hope it won’t be over for a long time yet. I’m deeply grateful to be able to share all of this with you.

We’ve tried out so many tours, explored new countries in Asia, made friends and experienced so much. Nevertheless, I’ve made up my mind to focus on the essentials – to spend less time organizing exotic new tours and more savoring life on the road. That’s why we’re withdrawing from a number of wonderful travel countries as a motorcycle tour organizer. It’s time for us to say

“Bye-bye Thailand, Sri Lanka, Tibet, Vietnam, Laos, Burma…”

Ladakh Tour

Our grand Spiti tour will be kicking off in a few days. I’ll be guiding the tour myself once again – I’m not about to miss out on three weeks of hardcore adventure. Here’s a little foretaste of what to expect at Sach Pass: http://www.gaskrank.tv/tv/gelaende/hardcore-extrem-enduro-himalaya.htm

Spiti Tour

I still have a lot to tell you about this epic adventure in this edition of the newsletter.

But let’s begin with the most important news:
In the coming year, our tours will be available exclusively through our website. Our cooperation with MOTORRAD action team has come to an amicable end. The advantage for you: tours in South India, Nepal, Bhutan and Ladakh previously offered through MAT will now be around 10% cheaper on average! Booking will also be simpler: send us an email, make a down payment and we’ll send you a confirmation. You can rely on us for in-depth advice on our tours, either by email or personally on the phone.

We’re also dropping all of the tours and destinations that we can’t serve with our own crews and bikes.
In future, we intend to focus on the home of the Royal Enfields, i.e. four different tours in the Indian Himalayas, tours in Bhutan and Nepal, and the Road to Mustang as a special highlight.
We’re going to remain active in South India and Goa, and most definitely in the medieval heart of India, Madhya Pradesh, as well as Uttarkhand, the new Himalayan biker’s paradise. India, Nepal and Bhutan are more than enough for us.

Tibet Tour

The five 5,000m+ passes and three lakes of Ladakh is our most popular tour – we’ve run it 25 times with more than 300 satisfied bikers over the past eight years and it’s still a true adventure...

The tour is on our program three times next summer. Bikes are still available for all of the dates, but in our experience they’ll be booked solid soon! Here are the dates and new prices:

ladakh tour preis

We have a very special Ladakh tour coming up for our pilot-tour friends at the end of next summer: we’re taking a small, flexible group to explore new tracks, valleys and passes and possibly integrate them into a revised 3 Lakes of Ladakh Tour as of 2018. So, it’s time for some serious exploring. We don’t want to give away too much, other than that it’s going to be really exciting...

ladakh pilot tour preis

In recent years, we’ve been supporting a wonderful German-run center for disabled children in Ladakh: www.ladakh-hilfe.de

ladakh hilfe

As of 2017, we will be offering Royal Enfield Himalayas on all tours for a small markup (€180 per tour) subject to availability – first come, first served. We have two Himalayas now, but we already have five of the enduros slated for Ladakh in 2017. ;-))

According to Road Captain Wolfgang, the Himalayas have better ground clearance and a more comfortable ride, but slightly less power and not quite as much torque as the classic Bullet. They lack the Bullet sound and the incomparable Bullet feeling.

You probably already know that our friend Uli Brée produced this video together with lensman Martin Stoll on our Nepal Biker’s Solidarity Ride in November 2015. The band YES SIR BOSS contributed the song, and the clip really nails the spirit of the ride!

Our “Senior” Road Captain Martin has two big reasons to celebrate: on September 6, he enjoyed his 60th birthday with his family on Mauritius. And shortly before that, he became a grandfather! Congrats to him, and to his daughter Shakti and her husband Ryan on the birth of their first son!

The next date has already been set: Saturday, Feb. 25 to Monday, March 13, 2017. The tour starts in Goa and ends in Cochin.
Optionally, why not spend a few days with us at Casa Tres Amigos in Goa to relax and get used to the climate before we hit the road? We’ll be happy to send you a quote.

We’ve done two pilot runs of this tour in previous winters, with discerning groups led by our Road Captains Willy and Martin. It was a great experience for riders and guides alike. We’ve refined the route further and added a day, and it’s now part of our regular tour program. Here’s Willy’s Facebook photo album of the first tour in 2015.

Another NEW tour next year: Uttarakhand

...the new Himalayan biking paradise

Our first tour of Uttarkhand in October 2015 was a great ride and a complete success for everyone involved. Some were even lucky enough to see a live tiger in Corbett National Park!

We’d love to show you everything we experienced there.
We were so taken by this new Himalayan biker’s paradise that we’ve added the tour to our regular program with a few small improvements.

Madhya Pradesh – The Heart of India Tour

We’ve scheduled this NEW tour for February 5 – 18, 2017.

The Heart of India has been a dream for us for 25 years. Now, finally, we will experience mystical places on selected trunk roads and jungle trails, visit major heritage sites and experience nature at its best in India’s largest tiger reserves.

We’ve further optimized the route based on the experiences of the last pilot tour, and we can safely say that our Madhya Pradesh Tour is the best possible way to enjoy the Heart of India in the saddle, with great roads and super (palace) hotels and lodges. Road Captain Shankar will once again be guiding this tour with great expertise and love for his country.

Congrats to Road Captain Wolf, whose first tours went really smoothly!

Wolfgang Schulte Wolfgang Schulte

We tapped our old friend and partner, Wolfgang Schulte from Spain/Brazil/Germany as a new Road Captain. With 19 (!) Classic Bike Adventure tours in 25 years under his belt, he now has the personal and professional freedom to guide several tours a year for us.

He started with two Ladakh tours in August and did a great job. Hats off to Wolf!
Next, he’ll be joining RC Peter for the grand Spiti tour. But first, we’re taking a week off together at Casa Kath Kuni in Kullu Valley, Peter’s new mountain home.

Casa Kath Kuni

Road Captain Shankar

Road Captain Shankar completed his first Classic Bike Adventure tour with flying colors and is now a full-fledged member of the crew. Over the summer he guided a discerning group of Austrians through Ladakh, and he’ll be on the road in Madhya Pradesh in February. The new Himachal tour originally planned for October 2017 – which was scouted and will be guided by RC Shankar – has been postponed by one year.

The new date: 6 – 21 Oct. 2018

Peter Völk

Peter Völk has reason to celebrate!

Last winter it occurred to me that some of our most faithful bikers have been on more than ten tours with us. That calls for a reward – so I decided that the first to hit twenty tours will get the next tour on the house.

I touched base with our pilot-tour regulars, and some had already logged 14 or 15 tours (!) with us.

Then along comes our “Big Peter” Völk and gives me this list:

Peter has been on twelve pilot tours and eight tours from our regular program.

1. 1996: Spiti
2. 1997: Ladakh
3. 1999: Magic Nepal Pilot Tour
4. 1999: Golden October
5. 2000: Magic Nepal
6. 2000: Trans Nepal Pilot Tour
7. 2001: Spiti
8. 2002: South India Pilot Tour with Action Team
9. 2003: Sikkim-Bhutan Pilot Tour
10. 2004: Sri Lanka Pilot Tour
11. 2005: South India
12. 2006: Rajasthan
13. 2006: Zanskar Pilot Tour
14. 2007: Tibet Pilot Tour
15. 2008: Sikkim-Bhutan
16. 2009: Ladakh Three Lakes Pilot Tour
17. 2010: Thailand Pilot Tour
18. 2011: Spiti via Sach Pass Pilot Tour
19. 2012: Nepal-Muktinath Pilot Tour
20. 2015: Uttarakhand Pilot Tour

Peter tops our ranking, and his next tour is on us! Congratulations!!

Bike and Bus to India - the Overland Tour

Bike and Bus to India   Starting September 23, 2017

The countdown is on! Werner Sommer, tour guide and bike service center manager in Goa, is once again gearing up for his grand overland tour. In one year, he will be setting off on this epic journey from Germany to India and back on Yamaha XT 600s.

A new addition to the team: Road Captain Tiziana. Many of you know her from our Classic Bike Tours. Tiziana will be guiding the Bike and Bus to India Overland Tour to India in the autumn of 2017, and in April 2018, from India to Germany via Nepal, Tibet, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan to Germany together with Werner.

As in previous years, the tour will be ending or starting from our beautiful Casa Tres Amigos in Goa. It’s the perfect spot for leisurely tour prep or decompressing on arrival.

For more info, check out Werner’s website – there are still openings on bikes or in the bus for this adventure of a lifetime:

Winter will be here before you know it – if you don’t have any plans yet, you might want to check out this nice feature on our South India and Goa tour by Brigitte Burri from the March edition of the Swiss magazine Motor Sport Schweiz. For bikers in double rooms, the tour costs only €2170; for pillions or jeep passengers, the price is €1800. Single room supplement: €450.

We still have a few openings on the following South India tours.

Goa and Southern India tours

The Casa Tres Amigos in Goa

The Casa Tres Amigos in Goa will remain open until April of next year, and after that our traditional home base will be history. Peter is going to sell the Casa and finally settle in the Himalayas. Our bike tour company is already on its way to its new headquarters in the Kullu Valley.

Casa Tres Amigos, Goa – history

We still have one shared season ahead of us – Peter, Ranjita, Werner and the whole team will once again go the extra mile for you until the end of March. Our South India tours will will start and end at the Casa one last time, and we’ve already found a new base in Asvem for the post-Casa era. All will be revealed soon...

Our room rates are now significantly lower, on average by nearly 20%. We streamlined our price list with fewer rates and better prices – also during peak season over Christmas and New Years.

So, that wraps up all the latest news from the worlds of Classic Bike Adventures and Casa Tres Amigos.

We wish you all a golden and dry autumn.

And keep dreaming of your next adventure with us!

See you soon – cruising in the Himalayas, in Goa and the South of India, in M.P., “the heart of India”, in Bhutan, or just relaxing in Goa…
