Motorcycle Adventure in Southern Africa

Between Desert and Ocean

This motorcycle tour through southern Africa links some of the continent’s most breathtaking landscapes into one extraordinary ride. Setting out from Johannesburg, the route sweeps through Botswana and Namibia all the way to the South African coast – a journey defined by wide-open spaces, dramatic contrasts and ever-changing scenery. Within just a few kilometres of the start, the landscape opens up, grows quieter and more untouched. The roads cut through savannas, arid semi-deserts and, further on, the spectacular desert regions of Namibia. Long, flowing stretches alternate with twisting sections – exactly the kind of riding that makes motorcycling in Africa so special.

Beyond the riding itself, it is the encounters and landscapes that define this journey: wildlife sightings on guest farms, endless horizons in Botswana, the red dunes of Sossusvlei and, finally, the dramatic Atlantic coastline. Riding the Chapman’s Peak Drive marks one of the tour’s final highlights before the journey concludes in Cape Town. This is a journey defined by freedom, open roads and the feeling of truly being on the move – kilometre by kilometre.

Motorcycle Adventure in Southern Africa – Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Johannesburg

After arriving in Johannesburg, a transfer takes the group to a quietly situated country hotel on the outskirts of the city. This is where riders meet their guide and fellow travellers for the first time. In the afternoon, motorcycles are picked up and there is the opportunity for a short shakedown ride in the surrounding area. These first kilometres are about getting acquainted with the bike and developing a feel for the road conditions ahead. In the evening, the group gathers for a shared dinner and a briefing on the tour ahead.

Day 2: Johannesburg – Zeerust

The first riding day carries the group out of greater Johannesburg and into the quieter regions of the country. The route deliberately avoids the major highways, favouring smaller, well-surfaced country roads instead. The landscape is shaped by rolling hills, open ground and expansive views. Sweeping bends alternate with longer straights throughout – ideal conditions for settling into the rhythm of the tour. Only in the final stretch does the group join the N4, which runs all the way into Zeerust.

Distance: approx. 240 km

Day 3: Zeerust – Kang, Botswana

In the morning the group heads north until it reaches the border with Botswana. After the border formalities the landscape gradually opens out. The route passes through wide, dry terrain with very little traffic. Long, quiet roads set the tone, conveying the characteristic sense of space that defines this part of the world. Along the way the group passes through small towns and settlements before arriving in Kang in the afternoon.

Distance: approx. 430 km

Day 4: Kang – Gobabis, Namibia

The route continues westward through Botswana. The landscape stays wide and open but slowly begins to shift in character. After crossing into Namibia, the surroundings become drier and more austere. The route passes through sparsely populated country before reaching the guest farm near Gobabis. In the afternoon there is the opportunity to explore the surroundings on a safari drive or observe wildlife such as giraffes, zebras and antelopes at close range.

Distance: approx. 430 km

Day 5: Gobabis – Windhoek

After an optional morning excursion into the bush, the ride toward Windhoek begins. The route cuts through Namibia’s central highlands, characterised by long, straight sections. The vast landscape and light traffic make for relaxed, steady riding throughout. By mid-afternoon the group arrives in the capital, Windhoek. Those who wish can explore the city on the bike before the day is out.

Distance: approx. 300 km

Day 6: Windhoek – Swakopmund

Today’s stage descends from Namibia’s highlands toward the Atlantic coast, offering two distinct route options. The faster option follows well-surfaced tarmac roads, allowing for relaxed, flowing riding through the wide landscapes of central Namibia. Alternatively, the route through the Namib-Naukluft Park on gravel tracks can be chosen. This option is more demanding to ride and passes through far more remote terrain – impressive desert scenery, sweeping valleys and virtually no traffic: a more immersive encounter with the Namib. Both options arrive at the coast in Swakopmund, where the dry desert air meets the cooler Atlantic climate.

Distance: approx. 330-370 km

Day 7: Rest Day in Swakopmund

The day is free for riders to spend as they please. Swakopmund offers plenty of options for excursions into the surrounding area. Whether a ride along the coast, a tour into the desert or a visit to the Moon Landscape – the region has no shortage of options. A boat trip from Walvis Bay is also available. The day offers time to recharge and absorb the impressions gathered so far.

Day 8: Swakopmund – Sossusvlei

This stage ranks among the scenic highlights of the entire tour. The route initially follows the coast before turning inland. The road passes through the Namib-Naukluft Park and through the impressive Kuiseb Canyon. Twisting sections alternate with wide, open stretches. The landscape feels raw, vast and utterly compelling. By afternoon the group reaches the Sossusvlei area.

Distance: approx. 350 km

Day 9: Sossusvlei – Helmeringshausen

The day is free for riders to spend as they please. Swakopmund offers plenty of options for excursions into the surrounding area. Whether a ride along the coast, a tour into the desert or a visit to the Moon Landscape – the region has no shortage of options. A boat trip from Walvis Bay is also available. The day offers time to recharge and absorb the impressions gathered so far.

Distance: approx. 270 km

Day 10: Helmeringshausen – Oranjemund

The route continues southward through Namibia’s wide, arid landscapes as far as Aus. In this area, with a little luck, it is possible to spot the famous wild horses of the Namib, which have adapted to the extreme conditions here over many generations. The destination is Oranjemund on the Orange River, on the edge of the former restricted diamond zone, now known as the Tsau //Khaeb National Park. The name “Tsau //Khaeb” comes from the Nama language and translates roughly as “soft” or “deep sand” – an apt description of this remote coastal landscape where the desert meets the Atlantic in dramatic fashion.

Distance: approx. 370 km

Day 11: Oranjemund – Kamieskroon

After just a few kilometres the group crosses into South Africa. The route initially follows the coast to Port Nolloth, a small town originally founded in 1855 as a copper port and today regarded as the gateway to the Diamond Coast. From there the ride continues to Springbok, a town whose name recalls the vast herds of springbok that once roamed this region and gathered at the few water points in the arid landscape. With each stage, the distinctive atmosphere of Namaqualand becomes more palpable – a region renowned for its extraordinary flora. After the winter rains, this semi-desert transforms for a few weeks into a spectacular carpet of wildflowers. In the afternoon the group arrives in Kamieskroon on the edge of Namaqua National Park.

Distance: approx. 300 km

Day 12: Kamieskroon – Citrusdal

The ride continues along the N7 through the hilly Namaqualand, shaped by broad horizons and the vivid colours of the landscape. At Clanwilliam the route enters the heart of rooibos country. Rooibos grows exclusively in this region and has become an important export product over the centuries. Further south the road drops into the valley of the Olifants River. The river’s name dates back to the era of the Voortrekkers, who once observed elephants here and named it accordingly. The destination is Citrusdal, nestled in the scenery of the Cederberg Mountains. Today the region is best known for its intensive citrus farming and offers a striking landscape contrast to the arid terrain of the preceding days.

Distance: approx. 330 km

Day 13: Citrusdal – Cape Town

The route heads toward the Atlantic coast and reaches the ocean again for the first time at Velddrif. From here the road follows the rugged west coast to Paternoster, one of the oldest fishing villages in South Africa. The name “Paternoster” is thought to derive from Portuguese sailors and translates as “Our Father” – a reference to the treacherous waters and frequent shipwrecks in this stretch of sea. The village itself is characterised by whitewashed Cape Dutch-style houses, colourful fishing boats and a long tradition of crayfish harvesting. Further south, Yzerfontein offers the chance to enjoy a traditional fish braai right on the beach – one of the most authentic ways to experience the local cuisine.

The distinctive name begins with a click sound from the San language and belongs to a cultural centre offering insights into the way of life and history of southern Africa’s indigenous people. On the final stretch into Cape Town the Atlantic accompanies the ride, until at Bloubergstrand the first view of Table Mountain appears – a powerful moment and the signal that the journey is almost complete.

Distance: approx. 330 km

Day 14: Cape Peninsula

A further highlight of the tour is the ride around the Cape Peninsula. Hugging the coastline, the route leads to the famous Cape of Good Hope, one of the most celebrated and historically significant places in Africa. The final metres to the lighthouse are covered on foot, rewarded by sweeping views over the rugged coastline and open ocean. Here, at the south-westernmost point of the continent, one of the most memorable moments of the tour unfolds. The return ride offers further impressions of the Cape region before the group heads back into Cape Town.

Day 15: Wine Country and Farewell

Zum Abschluss führt die Route durch die eindrucksvolle Wine Country around Stellenbosch, Paarl und Franschhoek. The roads weave through vineyards, past historic wine estates and small towns with Cape Dutch architecture. Twisting sections and quiet country roads offer one last session of relaxed, enjoyable riding. At midday the group returns to Cape Town and the motorcycles are handed back. In the evening the group gathers one final time for a shared farewell dinner overlooking the water. Over good food and harbour views, the journey is looked back on together – countless kilometres, special encounters and unforgettable landscapes.

Day 16: Departure

After breakfast, individual transfers to the airport and the journey home begin. Behind the group lies a journey through some of the most breathtaking regions of southern Africa – from wide savannas through the Namib Desert to the shores of the Atlantic. What remains are memories of endless roads, remarkable encounters and awe-inspiring landscapes – and the feeling of having discovered an entirely new world.
