Silk Road & Nomad Trails – Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

We begin our journey in the capital city of Bishkek, where we meet our team. After taking possession of the vehicles and receiving a technical briefing, we embark on a city tour, exploring Ala-Too Square and visiting Osh Bazaar to get a first impression of this modern city with its Soviet-era architecture and green parks. In the evening, we gather for a welcome dinner to discuss the travel plans.

Day 2: Bishkek to Toktogul Lake, Kyrgyzstan

After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, the true adventure begins as you leave Bishkek and head south through the Chuy Valley. Along the way, you can admire the vast plains framed by mountain ranges before the road becomes steeper, leading you up into the mountains. The route winds through spectacular gorges until you reach the Töö-Ashuu Pass at 3,180 meters, offering breathtaking views of the valley below and the surrounding peaks.

After crossing the pass, you descend into the picturesque landscape of the Toktogul Basin, passing by rivers and forests. By afternoon, you arrive at the idyllic Toktogul Lake, nestled among mountains. Here, you’ll have time to savor the tranquility and scenic beauty before staying overnight in a guesthouse near the lake at approximately 990 meters.

Day 3: Toktogul Lake to Kokand, Uzbekistan

After a peaceful night by Toktogul Lake, you continue your journey, following the road along the lake, through gentle hills and dense forests. After crossing the border into Uzbekistan, you enter the fertile region of the Fergana Valley. The drive takes you through small villages and fields until you finally reach the historic city of Kokand. Once the center of the Kokand Khanate, this city is renowned today for its impressive palaces and mosques. A highlight is the magnificent Khudayar Khan Palace, a must-see for its stunning architecture.

Day 4: Kokand to Samarkand

After a hearty breakfast, today’s journey takes you to Samarkand, one of the most important cities along the Silk Road. The drive leads you through vast landscapes and past traditional Uzbek villages. Samarkand, the legendary city, awaits with its magnificent architecture and millennia-old history. In the evening, you’ll have time to gather first impressions of the famous Registan Square and the surrounding mosques. Overnight stay is in a charming boutique hotel.

Day 5: Exploring Samarkand

Spend the day immersing yourself in the rich history of Samarkand. Begin with a visit to the Bibi-Khanym Mosque, an architectural masterpiece. Next, explore the Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum, the final resting place of Tamerlane, with its breathtaking azure dome and intricate designs. Continue to the Ulugh Beg Observatory, where you can marvel at medieval advancements in astronomy, followed by a traditional Uzbek lunch. In the afternoon, visit the bustling Siab Bazaar, offering a variety of local goods and a glimpse into daily life. End the day at the Shah-i-Zinda Necropolis, known for its beautiful tilework and spiritual significance. Enjoy a relaxing evening, perhaps with a stroll through the illuminated Registan Square. This day provides an in-depth exploration of Samarkand’s most famous landmarks. Alternatively, find a cozy spot and enjoy a few cool drinks.

Day 6: Samarkand to Dushanbe, Tajikistan

Today’s route takes us from Samarkand through the historic heartland of Uzbekistan and onward to Tajikistan. After crossing the border, our team ensures a smooth customs process, allowing us to continue easily through Tajikistan’s picturesque valleys and mountains. Our first stop is the Hissar Fortress, about 30 km west of Dushanbe. This significant historical site from the 16th century offers fascinating insights into the history and culture of Tajikistan. We explore the well-preserved ruins, visit the small on-site museum, and enjoy views of the surrounding valleys.

After visiting the Hissar Fortress, we continue our journey and reach Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, in the afternoon. Known for its wide boulevards and Soviet-era architecture, the city combines historical charm with modern development. We spend the rest of the afternoon exploring some of Dushanbe’s main attractions, including Rudaki Park, a beautifully landscaped garden perfect for a leisurely stroll. In the evening, we enjoy a shared dinner at a local restaurant, sampling Tajik cuisine, including Qurutob (a yogurt and bread dish) and Plov, the national specialties.

Day 7: Dushanbe to Khalaikum (entrance to the Pamir Highway)

Begin your day in Dushanbe and prepare for a scenic drive to Khalaikum. The journey takes you through some of Tajikistan’s most breathtaking landscapes, including winding roads along the Panj River, which forms the natural border with Afghanistan. This part of the journey offers a unique perspective on the rugged beauty of the region, showcasing both its natural splendor and remote, tranquil surroundings. Upon reaching Khalaikum, a small town nestled in the mountains, you will check into a local guesthouse. Khalaikum is known for its warm hospitality and provides a wonderful opportunity to experience rural Tajik life.

Day 8: Khalaikum to Khorog

Today promises an absolute highlight as we drive along the Panj River, with spectacular views of the winding river and the towering mountains flanking it. This stretch is especially scenic, as the road hugs the cliffs, offering glimpses across the river into Afghanistan. Along the way, you’ll pass through small villages, allowing you to observe the daily lives of locals and gain a unique cultural insight into the region. The road conditions can be challenging at times, with winding paths and varying surfaces, adding to the sense of adventure.

Khorog, the capital of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, awaits us in the afternoon. Here, we visit the Khorog Botanical Garden, one of the highest in the world, with a diverse collection of plants. The garden offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and provides a peaceful spot to relax after the drive.

Day 9: Khorog to Murghab

This stage is one of the most challenging and rewarding parts of the journey, as you ascend into the high-altitude landscapes of the Pamir Mountains. Leaving Khorog, the route takes you through rugged terrain and remote valleys. Known as part of the Pamir Highway, this road is famous for its breathtaking views and extreme conditions, including high altitudes and sharp curves. The landscape is stunning, with towering peaks, vast plateaus, and occasional glimpses of turquoise lakes.

Day 10: Murghab to Sary Tash, Kyrgyzstan

From Murgab you continue your journey across the Pamir Plateau and cross the border back into Kyrgyzstan. The route leads through impressive valleys, over high passes and finally to the village of Sary Tash, which lies at an altitude of 3,150 m. Here you have an impressive view of the peaks of the Pamirs and the Tian Shan Mountains.

Day 11: Sary Tash to Jalal-Abad (famous Karakorum Highway)

Today we drive from Sary Tash to Jalal-Abad, an ideal stopover on our way to Son Kul Lake. The route takes us through the impressive mountainous landscape of southern Kyrgyzstan, with wide valleys and spectacular views. The road consists of both asphalt and well-maintained gravel sections, leading us deeper into the heart of Kyrgyzstan. Upon arrival in Jalal-Abad, we have the chance to unwind and visit the city’s famous mineral springs, known for their healing properties. This offers a welcome opportunity to relax after the drive and recharge for the next leg of our journey.

Day 12: Jalal-Abad to Song Kul

After a restful night and a breakfast in Jalal-Abad, we continue our journey to Son Kul Lake. The route takes us through the mountains and over the Moldo-Ashuu Pass, renowned for its breathtaking panoramas. Along the way, we pass several small villages and pastures where nomads tend their animals, offering glimpses into traditional Kyrgyz life. By early afternoon, we reach Son Kul Lake, where we will stay overnight in traditional yurts and immerse ourselves in the untouched natural surroundings.

Day 13: Song Kul to Issyk Kul

After a relaxing morning at Son Kul, you continue to the famous Issyk Kul, one of the largest mountain lakes in the world. The road takes you through picturesque villages and past impressive mountain ranges. Upon reaching the lake, you can unwind along the shore and enjoy the views of the surrounding mountains. You’ll spend the night at a hotel by the lake at an elevation of 1,609 meters.

Day 14: Issyk Kul to Bishkek

After a restful time by the lake, you head back to Bishkek. This leg of the journey follows scenic shores and passes through traditional villages. On the way, we stop at the Burana Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a remnant of the ancient city of Balasagun. The tower offers panoramic views and insights into the history of the Silk Road. After about an hour of exploration, we continue on the remaining stretch to Bishkek, arriving in the late afternoon to conclude our journey on a relaxed note.

After breakfast, you have some time to gather final impressions of Bishkek before your transfer to the airport for your journey home.
